About

Hi Everyone!

Welcome to my site  ^^

I’ve studied Korean at Yonsei, Ewha (yes, men can go there too), Seoul Academy, and Geos, but I stayed the longest at the YBM’s main branch in Jongno and enjoyed my classes there the most.

When studying Korean the first year or two seems to be the hardest, because that’s when you have to learn the grammar of Korean — and that’s the most difficult part.  As I’m sure you know, Korean and English language structure are almost the furthest apart of any two languages in the world.

Back when I was studying Korean most intensely, I wanted to live a life free of English, but Koreans always sought to speak to me in English.  Even when I would order food in Korean, the worker at the counter would respond in English nine times out of time.  You may already know this, but one of the hardest things about learning Korean, is that no one in Korea will speak Korean to foreigners.

My goal since day one has been to become a great translator.  I love the Korean language and its diversity of expression.  I love studying Korean idioms rooted in Chinese (고사성어) and the pure Korean proverbs (속담) too.

Anyway, I made this site because I wanted to share some of the techniques that I have learned over the last eight years.

Good luck!

I’ll looking forward to your response.

    Hi Michael,

I’m a college student teaching Korean to other students as part of an alternative language program at my school in the U.S.
I’m currently teaching a group of 4 beginners. We meet three times every week for an hour each time, using a very boring (we’ve all agreed on this), distasteful textbook.
I try to focus on speaking (practicing dialogues/holding conversations) in my class instead of going over extensive grammar, but some of my students have been telling me that it’s hard to decide, in conversation, which particles to use.
Korean is my first language, so everything comes naturally to me. So I can never explain clearly enough when to use what, especially in conversations, in which you need to be able to keep the flow of it going. I guess years of regularly using a language has its pros and cons when it comes to trying to teach it.
I was wondering if you can help me. I would really appreciate it if you could just tell me how you think of certain things when you speak, such as the difference between 은/는 and 이/가 in spoken Korean.
I have told them the basics, like how one puts focus on the subject and other the clause, but it is pretty hard to do this when you are still a beginner and haven’t quite grasped the basic sentence structures.
Let me know if you’re willing to help me. I have my email up there; facebook works too! Thanks and keep doing good work on this website please!!

    Hi Michael,

Can you comment on the book you recently finished? Is it about your experiences in Korea? Is it about learning Korean? Is it written in English or Korean? Do you have a publisher lined up?

    Thanks.

‘Hello!

    • Michael

      Hi, Archie!
Thanks for sharing your passion about the Korean language with us. It looks like you are very driven to learn. I think the most important thing when learning a language is undying motivation. A lot of people are passionate about studying for a month or two but quickly fizzle out. It’s important to understand that learning a language is a long-term commitment. At the least, it takes two or three years to achieve fluency in day-to-day conversation, and another five to ten years to reach the point where you can understand newspapers, literature, and scholarly works.

I don’t know how exactly you’d like me to help you, but I’m sure you can use this site to get in touch with Koreans who would love to teach you. I recently finished writing a book, and from now on I’ll have more time to devote to this site. Through the videos, podcasts, and written lessons I post here, I hope to be of great assistance to people learning Korean all across the globe.

      Talk to you again soon.

Hi! Michael, it’s good to see you again through your ‘new baby'(I can’t use italic here-_-)~^^ I really like the design of this site.It looks neat and something well-made handcraft..^^
Whenever I look around your sites, I look at it in awe. I can see you have been spending lots of days which are full with extremely time-consuming, endless correction and up-loading things and on top of that, ‘updating’.
I’d like to be of little help if I could. ^^
    Oh! I found one typo(hopefully) in 의성어/의태어.
‘벌떡벌떡’ =>’벌컥벌컥’ gulping sound is 벌컥, not 벌떡, 벌떡 is ‘spring up’ or ‘(stand up) so sudden’. I think you already know these though.
    See you around,
    Cheers!
